Master of Mathematics for Educators (MME)

Program of Study
Degree Type
Master of Mathematics for Educators (MME)

This program is designed primarily for secondary school mathematics teachers with all classes offered in the late afternoon or evening. All MME designated courses are available online, either synchronously or asynchronously. Mathematical content courses offer a solid foundation in areas such as geometry, algebra, differential equations, modeling, number theory, discrete mathematics and statistics, while also including many unique, modern applications. Additionally, students develop materials, based on coursework, which may be used in their own classes. Technology is introduced and used whenever appropriate.  Examples currently include Matlab, Maple, Excel, Audacity, and Geogebra. Additional flexibility is built into the degree program, allowing students to focus on mathematics and related course content, while providing an option to take STEM education, Learning Sciences, Physics, and Computer Science focused courses.

Degree Requirements

Candidates for the Master of Mathematics for Educators must successfully complete 30 credit hours of graduate study. This may include a 6-credit project (MME 592-4-6).  Classes are offered 3 semesters a year.

The degree may be completed in slightly over two years, but all individual scheduling needs can be taken into account.

Candidates for the Master of Mathematics for Educators must successfully complete 30 credit hours of graduate study. This must include at least 18 credits in content area specific to mathematical sciences (any MME designated course; any MA course at the 500-level). There is the option to complete a 6-credit project, focused on implementing mathematical education approaches in the classroom (MME 592, 594, and 596), which can be part of the 18 content-based credits.

The remaining credits can be chosen from mathematical courses for mathematical depth (any MME designated course or any MA course at the 500-level), or courses from related fields for additional breadth. These related fields include computer science or physics (CS or MPE courses at the 500-level), learning sciences (PSY courses at the 500-level), and STEM education (EDU courses at the 500-level). All out-of-department courses need to be approved by the program coordinator. Classes are offered 3 semesters a year.

Admissions Requirements

Candidates for the Master of Mathematics for Educators and Master of Science in Mathematics for Educators degree must have a bachelor’s degree and must possess a background equivalent to at least a minor in mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra, and statistics. Students are encouraged to enroll in courses on an ad hoc basis without official program admission. However, (at most) four such courses may be taken prior to admission.
